We met again yesterday evening to continue the August Bank Holiday trip discussions. After much deliberating it went to the vote and the Vanoise National Park came out the winner. This closest airport is Grenoble.

A number of members met at the Shoulder of Mutton yesterday evening (22nd May) to propose and discuss a suitable area/location for our August Bank Holiday trip.

The discussions went well. Although there wasn’t a final decision by the end of the evening, the suggestions were narrowed down to two main areas: the Tessin Area in Switzerland and the Ecrin/Vanoise National Parks in France. It was decided that some further research was required, particularly for the the Tessin area in Switzerland, to determine the extent of the available activities.

We decided to meet again on Tuesday the 5th June to make a final decision on the location. You may find it useful to do some research on the activities in the areas short listed (Via Ferrata, climbing, mountaineering, walking, mountain biking etc) and look for suitable campsites, and check flights, in order to help you decide and vote for your preferred area.

    Switzerland

    • Tessin area: Good for climbing. 4000m peaks about half a days drive away. Some Via Ferrata (not sure how many). Likely to be good / warm weather.

    France

We decided against two other areas for this trip:

    • Valaise in South Switzerland: This is the Matterhorn area and is very wet apparently.
    • Chamonix: At the time of the year we are going the weather can be quite bad. It is popular, commercial and touristy area.

If you find any good information or have any questions or suggestions, please share by email as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone for coming last night and for bringing maps and personal experience to the discussions.

    Bryan
