The Lancashire Mountaineering Club Hut, Cae Ysgubor , was booked for 12 of us for the weekend. Days out climbing and walking had been planned. All that was left was to enjoy; Friday came and we were off . . .
Friday 9th November
Alan M and David were the first to arrive having left on Friday morning. They went for a walk down in to Beddgelert to stretch their legs. Alan W, Jason G & Stuart also left early on Friday and stopped off at Windgather for some climbing en route. Approaching Windgather there was mist and drizzle in the air. After bouldering to warm up, Alan W geared up and led the first climb of the day. Stuart then made short work of The Rib Right-hand. Alan W should have learnt that ribs and arêtes were dryer but he didn’t and ended up attempting two wet, green and slimy chimneys! Stuart picked dryer routes and finished the day with High Buttress Arete, a lovely Top 50 route. Climbing over it was time to head to Wales. Luckily for Alan W and Jason G David had over catered with his lasagne, they did their bit to reduce food waste. It was lovely David. The rest of the group arrived throughout the evening. Malcolm made the spicy peanut sauce for the Saturdays group meal. Allowing it to mature for 24 hours!
Saturday 10th November
Was a little bit damp, but that didn’t stop us. Shane was Shane and went for a run up Watkins, down Pyg. Not happy with that he followed it with Glyder Fach & Fawr finishing off with Tryfan and the Roman camp. A gentle day! Alan W went off to pick up Laura (she used to work at Big Rock and now lives in Llanberis). Then with Jason G and Stuart they headed off to walk the Nantlle ridge. It was a little bit blowy and damp up on the ridge. Michelle Iwona, David, Malcolm and Alan M walked the Llyn Dinas loop to Nantmor and Beddgelert. Gill and Adam went up a bit of Snowdon, via the Watkins Path, and the over to Beacon Climbing Centre.
The evening saw some of the group head off to Beddgelert to watch the rugby before returning for dinner. Again it was to be Malcolm’s spicy pasta, with the sauce having matured David took the lead cooking the pasta ready for the return of the rugby spectators. The evening finished with us listening to the music of Alan M (piano accordion) and David (violin).
Sunday 11th November
Sunday started with Iwona, Michelle and Shane running to Llyn Dinas with Bob and Sky. Followed by an early morning swim, then back in time for breakfast! After clearing up the hut Gill and Adan followed in their footsteps to Llyn Dinas, and didn’t take it further! Then it was back to Beacon Climbing Centre. Jason G, Stuart and Alan W, having got wet for the last two days went straight to the dry Beacon Climbing Centre. Alan M and David went for a walk from Llanystumdwy before heading to the Beacon Climbing Centre (Humm, I can see a trend here). Shane being true to form went for a run through the Carneddau.
Cae Ysgubor is a wonderful hut, well done to the Lancashire Mountaineering Club for building it and allowing us to use it – I think we’ll be back.
I’d endorse the last comment. It was a great weekend.
